Hi, I'm Alex

I was born in Weißenburg in Bavaria, located in Middle Franconia Germany. So naturally, I began my filmic career shooting punk rock and heavy metal music videos as a teenager.  This electric start led me to a camera apprenticeship at Action Concept, one of Germany’s premier stunt houses where I got to load countless short reels of 35mm film into bomb proof camera boxes and then do my best not to get blown up or run over in the process.

Since 2006, I’ve been fortunate to practice my trade and develop my skills as an electrician, grip, gaffer, 1st & 2nd assistant camera, camera operator and Steadicam operator.  After a decade of working professionally in the industry I made the decision to pursue a degree Cinematography and in 2019 graduated from the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (KHM). This experience drastically expanded my cinematographer’s toolkit and made me a better filmmaker. I was allowed to dive deeper into many aspects of the production process. I also got to geek out and explore color design, color grading, digital storyboarding, pre-visualization, using tools like cinetracer and real-time engines such as unity.  Most importantly I spent a great deal of my studies focusing on dramaturgy and screenwriting.

As a working cinematographer, I’ve had the opportunity to shoot numerous commercials, music videos, documentaries and short films. My years experience on and off set have given me a deep appreciation of performer movement and character motivation. As I move into the future, I am led by an obsessive drive towards creating space — both on set and in the visual language of the film — for the emotional inner life of the characters and to crafting a moving frame where there actions manifest in the outside world. Oh and when I’m not working on a film, I’m probably learning more about permaculture or riding my carver in the bike lanes in hopes of one day becoming a pretty good surfer.
